La Fonda Hotel (La Fonda on the Plaza), Santa Fe, New Mexico

La Fonda on the Plaza occupies a site at the corner of the Santa Fe Plaza that has hosted inns since the early Spanish colonial period. Local tradition holds that an inn stood here from the founding of Santa Fe in 1607–1610, though documentary confirmation is limited. The present adobe-style building opened in 1922 and operated for decades as a Fred Harvey hotel under the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. The property has been rebuilt and expanded multiple times. Documented violent events associated with the broader site or earlier structures include the 1867 shooting death of Territorial Supreme Court Chief Justice John P. Slough in a political dispute, along with reports of earlier public hangings and gunfights in the plaza area. The current hotel embraces its historic character and includes La Plazuela restaurant over the former location of a deep well.

Reported Hauntings and Folklore

Several distinct figures appear in guest and staff accounts. One is a man in a long black coat seen pacing hallways or disappearing into stairwells; some identify him with Judge John P. Slough. Another is a distraught salesman or gambler who, according to the legend, lost his money and jumped into the well that once stood in the courtyard; diners and staff at La Plazuela report seeing a figure walk to the center of the room and vanish into the floor. A third is a young bride said to have been murdered on her wedding night by a former lover; she is associated with Room 510, the lobby, elevators, and basement. Additional reports include unexplained footsteps, a figure under the covers of an empty bed, and residual activity near La Terraza. These stories circulate in regional ghost literature, Historic Hotels of America listings, and local media; they are not corroborated by contemporary 19th-century records of residual phenomena. The hotel has hosted paranormal investigations and appears on lists of haunted hotels.
